Introduction

Monitors a Cloud Foundry application's state during an experiment and validates it against an expected state. The check continuously polls the CF V3 API and reports a failure if the app is not in the expected state according to the selected check mode.

This action is useful to verify that an app stays STARTED throughout a disruption, or that it reaches a STOPPED state at least once when an attack fires.

Use Cases

  • Verify that an application stays STARTED during a load test or network fault.
  • Confirm that an app transitions to STOPPED at least once when the Stop App action fires.
  • Assert that an app is back in the expected state after a rollback.

Parameters

ParameterDescriptionDefault
DurationHow long the check runs. The check polls app state every 500ms for this duration.30s
Expected StateThe app state to check for. Valid values: Started (STARTED) or Stopped (STOPPED).STARTED
State Check ModeHow the expected state is evaluated. All the time (allTheTime): every poll must show the expected state. At least once (atLeastOnce): the state must be observed at least once during the duration.allTheTime

Note on App State During Restart

The CF V3 API exposes two desired states: STARTED and STOPPED. A restart operation recycles the underlying processes without changing the desired state — it remains STARTED throughout. Only an explicit stop (via the Stop App action or cf stop) sets the state to STOPPED. This check will therefore only observe STOPPED when the app has been explicitly stopped, not during a restart.
